Invest in me: The perfect hydration

“Let him who would enjoy a good future waste none of his present” -Roger Babson

I’m still slowly tackling my hierarchy of needs to make sure I am who I want to be during my journey to FI.

Twelth post

This is a tricky subject for me. I know that water is good for you and there are numerous benefit but I really find it hard to drink enough water. Cups of tea? Yep I can drink gallons but it doesnt really count.

Why drink water?

Water is a liquid nutrient according to NHS Choices.  Here are six reasons why to drink water:

water

  1. Replace lost fluids

The body is 60% water. Digestion, circulation, salvia, body temperature and transportation of nutrients around the body all use water.

  1. Control calorie consumption
The age old statement of the body confusing hunger with thirst. Water fills you up so it means less room for food when your trying to lose some weight.
  2. Energize muscles
This one was quite scary to me after working so hard on strength training! If the cells in your body don’t maintain the balance of fluids and electrolytes, they can shrivel which causes muscles fatigue and means they don’t work as well.

4. Glowing skin
Water acts as a protective barrier for the skin to prevent extra fluid loss.  Water can help decrease dryness and premature wrinkles.

5. Flushes out toxins
Water assists the kidneys with flushing out toxins from the body. Consistently being dehydrated puts you at a higher risk of kidney stones.

6. Maintains bowel function
Could I be one of the few FI bloggers that talk about bowels on their blog? erm…. Not too much detail needed for this one I hope.

I’ve also been really obsessed focused on the link between mild dehydration and mental health. Did you know that just 2% dehydration can cause a 20% reduction in performance in physical and cognitive activities – scary!

Signs of dehydration

  • Drowsiness
  • Headaches
  • Dry skin, lips and eyes
  • Lack of concentration
  • Irritability

How much should I drink?

The NHS advises 6 – 8 glasses (1.5 – 2 litres)

Tricks and tips

  • Have a drink with every snack and meal
  • If you cant manage water don’t stop drinking.
  • Keep a bottle of water handy (reusable BPA free) and keep refilling it
  • Aim for 6 – 8 glasses a day
  • If your thirsty – drink water

How do you keep hydrated?

  1. Coffee and more coffee……lol
Honestly I’m not a fan of plain water so I drink sugar free squash, lots of coffee and allow myself a can of coke a day. Since finding out that all fluids count I drink more rather than forcing myself to have a pint of water which I avoided.
The best way to know if you are drinking enough? The colour of your wee!
I enjoy your ‘Invest in me’ posts hun. No point in being financially free if you are not well enjoy to appreciate it.

I drink a lot of water personally, I really like water now but I used to be the one who said “but water tastes horrible…or it has no taste at all at best”.. I do have a slight addiction at times to pepsi max though hehe. Chris
